What is 3D product design?

From a sketch to a manufacturable 3D model

3D product design is the process of turning a concept into a fully engineered 3D model ready for prototyping and production. It is the step every idea-to-product journey, patent application, or new product launch in the UAE has to pass through before a single part is made. Our in-house team handles the full path: industrial design, CAD modelling, and design for additive manufacturing, without outsourcing the thinking.

  • Sketch to 3D model concept sketches, reference photos, or verbal briefs converted into accurate CAD geometry.
  • CAD design service toleranced, manufacturable models built in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Rhino.
  • Design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) geometry engineered specifically for 3D printing, not adapted from machining limits.
  • Idea to prototype a physical, testable object in your hands within days, not months.

For inventors & entrepreneurs

The path from patent to prototype
without a team

Most inventors in the middle east face the same problem: a clear idea and no obvious route from concept to physical product
without hiring a full product team. Our inventor service in Dubai solves that.

01

Feasibility review, before you commit
We assess whether your concept is manufacturable using additive methods, flag any engineering constraints, and give you an honest view of timeline and cost. Free for new clients.

02

Design-to-patent support
Under NDA, we produce the detailed dimensional drawings, CAD models, and rendered visuals that patent applications typically require.

03

Proof-of-concept prototype
Your first patent prototype built to demonstrate the principle, test the idea, or show investors. Usually 3–5 days from approved brief.

04

Engineering prototype for testing
A second-generation prototype, printed in functional material and toleranced for assembly what you test before committing to tooling.

05

Market-ready production run
Once validated, we produce your first commercial batch. For many UAE-market products, additive manufacturing stays cost-effective even at small volumes no tooling required.
A note on confidentiality

Every inventor project begins with a mutual NDA. Your concept, drawings, and project details are never shared outside the 3DX team, and never used as portfolio examples without your written permission.

We understand your idea is your asset. It stays protected from the first conversation from idea to product, Dubai-confidential.

Why 3DX

The only full-service product
design provider in the GCC

Most 3D printing companies in th middle east will take your file and print it. We are one of the few that can go from a sketch
to a finished product under one roof design, CAD modelling, prototyping, and small-batch production, all handled by our own team.

In-house design & CAD modelling service

We don’t outsource the design or the modelling. Our engineers handle both, so nothing is lost in handover and you deal with one team from brief to delivery.

You keep the CAD file

Every client receives the final SolidWorks, Fusion 360, STEP, or IGES file. Full IP ownership transfers to you on completion no lock-in, no licensing.

Rapid prototyping in days, not weeks

Most projects complete a first physical prototype in 2–5 days from approved CAD, with one round of design iteration included as standard.

SolidWorks & Fusion 360 design service

Parametric, toleranced CAD built in the formats your manufacturing partners already work with STEP, IGES, STL, or native files.

Design for additive manufacturing built in

Every model is engineered for the printer from the first sketch organic geometry, support minimisation, and part consolidation as standard practice, not an afterthought.

From idea to product, in one place

Concept sketching, CAD design, prototyping, and small-batch production no handoffs between vendors, no lost context between stages.

Why 3DX

The only full-service reverse
engineering provider in the UAE

Most 3D printing companies in Dubai will take your file and print it. We are one of the few that can go from your physical object to a finished part under one roof scanning, modelling, and manufacturing all handled by our team.

In-house scanning & CAD

We don’t outsource the scan or the modelling. Our engineers handle both, so nothing is lost in handover and you deal with one team from start to finish.

You keep the CAD file

Every client receives the final STEP/IGES file. You own it. Use it for future orders, pass it to your engineering team, or archive it. No lock-in, no licensing.

Dimensional inspection included

Every job includes a CMM or caliper-based inspection report comparing the finished part to the approved CAD. Delivered with your parts, at no extra charge.

5–7 day standard turnaround

From part receipt to finished delivery, most reverse engineering jobs complete in 5–7 business days. Rush service available for critical breakdowns.

On-site scanning across the UAE

For large or fixed equipment that can’t be moved, our team travels to you. We’ve scanned components across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Al Ain.

Volume discounts on repeat orders

Once your CAD file is created, repeat orders are fast and cost-effective. Many clients set up a standing order for consumable or wear components.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about our
3D product design service

Yes a rough sketch, a description, or even a reference image is enough to begin. We will ask questions, understand the application and constraints, and produce initial concept directions for your review. Many of our best projects started with a photograph and a sentence.

You do, completely. On payment of the final invoice, full intellectual property including CAD files, design drawings,
rendered images, and manufacturing data transfers to you. We do not retain rights to use your project as a portfolio
example without your explicit written permission.
A straightforward single-part product with a clear brief: 2–3 weeks from kick-off to first prototype. A complex
multi-part assembly, or a product requiring design iteration: 4–8 weeks. We give you a specific date at the project
scoping stage, not a range.
We are not patent attorneys, but we regularly work with inventors who are in the patent process. We can produce
the detailed dimensional drawings, CAD models, and rendered visuals that patent applications typically require,
and can co-ordinate directly with your IP attorney under NDA.
We model in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, and Rhino, and accept STL, OBJ, STEP, IGES, SolidWorks (.sldprt),
Rhino (.3dm), and AutoCAD (.dwg/.dxf) files. We deliver STEP, IGES, STL, or native files depending on your
requirement. If you only have a sketch, we start from scratch no file required.
Yes. Once your prototype is validated, we move directly into small-batch production from 5 to 500+ units
using the same CAD file and material qualification, with no tooling investment and no handoff to a separate
manufacturer.

3DX can process common mesh files, such as stl, obj, step, iges, 3dm.

We support mesh file types: STL, OBJ, STEP, IGES, WRL, WRZ, STP, IGS, PLY, ARC, CATProduct, CATShape, CGR, DLV, EXPm, IAM, NEU, PAR, PKG, PRT, PSM, SAB, SESSION, SLDPRT, STPZ, UNV, X_T, XAS, XMT, XPR, 3DM, 3dMXL, ASM, CATPart, IPT, JT, MF1, MODEL, SAT, U3D, VDA, VRML, X_B, HPMJF

Please note that while some file types will upload successfully, others may not be used to submit an order on our platform. We suggest you refer to the above lists to avoid any upload failures. 3DX does not accept drawing files (except when accompanied by a CAD file), or IGES and F3D files. Below is a list of exceptional file types and in what instances they can be used to place an order with 3DX: 3DX cannot currently quote or make parts based on assembly files. If you are interested in ordering an assembly, each part will need to have its own CAD file.

However, if you are uploading your Bill Of Material for production, 3DX will accept assembly files as supplementary information. Common assembly file types are .sldasm, .asm, .iam, and .catproduct. The only time you may upload a drawing file is when it's in conjunction with a CAD file, and it must be in PDF format. We do not accept .slddrw, .dxf, or .catdrawing files. We also cannot quote a project based on a drawing alone.
